Levoit Core 600S review

The most clean air for the money in a big room. Filters are the catch.

Levoit Core 600S air purifier
Best for big rooms
4.4/ 5$459

Good for

  • Open-plan rooms up to 80 m²
  • Heavy bushfire smoke
  • Real pellet carbon for smell

Not for

  • Tight budgets: filters cost about $180 a year
  • Small bedrooms (overkill)

Verdict

In HouseFresh's lab the 600S delivered about 676 m³/h, more than any other unit we rate, including the Breville. That's enough for a large open-plan living area at the five air changes an hour smoke calls for. It carries about 160 g of carbon pellets, so it handles the smell as well as the particles.

The catch is the filter: about $119 every six to eight months. Over three years, filters cost more than the unit. It's often $459 on sale against a $599 list price, so don't pay full price.

How it handles Perth's air

  • Bushfire smoke: excellent. High airflow plus real carbon. The best choice we rate for a big room in the Hills.
  • Pollen: excellent. Clears a large room fast in ryegrass season.
  • Dust: excellent.
  • Pets: good. The carbon helps with odour; there's no dedicated pet mode.

Watch out

It's loud on its top speed, so most people will run it on high while out and on low while home. The pre-filter is bonded to the cartridge, so you replace the whole thing when the carbon is spent. As with the 400S, Levoit's US marketing no longer claims a HEPA grade, though the Australian listing still says H13.
